He was a poor Scottish farmer .One day, while he worked for his every day family’s bread he hears a cry for help from the direction of a nearly swamp .In middle of mud was a little boy who tried in vain to escape from mug and desperately cried for help . The man was able to remove the child from the swamp, to save him from an awful death.
The day after this incident, at the poorly man’s house came an elegant man descending from a luxury gig.He told to farmer that he is the father of the boy saved the day before.
„I want to reward you” he said to poor man. „You have saved my son’s life.”
„I can’t accept money for what I did.” farmer replied.
In the same time, Farmer’s son stood beside those two men.
„It’s your son?” asked the nobleman.
„Yes.” farmer replied, obviously excited.
„Then I propose you …
a bargain.” said
the nobleman. „Let me give your son the same level of education that i give to my son.If your son will looks like you, I have no doubt that one day he’ll become the man that both of us we’ll be proud of . „
The farmer accepted.The poor man’s son frequency the best schools.Then,he attend the famous school of medicine,St.Mary ‘s Hospital in London.
Over the years, the son of the humble farmer become biologist and pharmacologist. He published many articles on bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy. His best-known achievements are the discovery of the enzyme lysozyme in 1923 and an antibiotic from a fungus in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Walter Florey and Ernst Boris Chain. In 1999, Time Magazine named him …one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century for his discovery and stated; „It was a discovery that would change the course of history. „The active ingredient in that mold, which turned out to be an infection-fighting agent of enormous potency. When it was finally recognized for what it was—the most efficacious life-saving drug in the world—it would alter forever the treatment of bacterial infections. By the middle of the century, the discovery of that drug has saved almost 200 millions of people.
Many years later, that boy who had been rescued from the swamp, fell from a serious form of a pneumonia.What saved him? What do you think?
